St. Barbara

Barbara lived in the 3rd century in Nicomedia and died as a martyr for the Christian faith. She is venerated as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers.

The “Anima” possesses a larger relic of St. Barbara, which Pope Adrian VI bequeathed to the rector Cardinal Willem van Enckevoirt. On her feast day (December 4), it is displayed for veneration in an ornate tower reliquary on the altar of her chapel.

St. Henry and St. Cunigunde

Emperor Henry II (973–1024) was canonized in 1146. His wife, St. Cunigunde, died in 1033 (or 1039) and was canonized in 1200. The imperial couple is buried in a marble high tomb in Bamberg Cathedral. Their joint feast day is celebrated on July 13.

Parts of their relics were given to the “Anima” and are kept in a bust reliquary.

St. Leopold and St. Wenceslas

Margrave Leopold III (1073–1136) was canonized in 1485 by Pope Innocent VIII and is venerated as the patron saint of Austria, as well as of Upper Austria, Lower Austria, and Vienna.

His feast day is November 15, when the relic is displayed for veneration.

Duke Wenceslas (Václav) of Bohemia (c. 905–929/935) was soon venerated by the people as a martyr after his violent death and remains the national patron saint of the Czech Republic.

His feast day is September 28.

A statue of St. Wenceslas stands in the courtyard of the college.

St. John Nepomuk and St. Jan Sarkander

John Nepomuk (1350–1393) was a Bohemian priest and martyr. He was canonized in 1729 by Pope Benedict XIII. His feast day (May 16) was already included in the Anima calendar in 1722 and is solemnly celebrated in Santa Maria dell’Anima, where the first Nepomuk altar in Rome is located.

In the chapel designed by Ludwig Seitz, St. John Nepomuk is depicted together with St. Jan Sarkander. The latter was a Moravian priest who was beatified in 1860 as a martyr and canonized in 1993 by Pope John Paul II. His feast day is March 17.

Relics of both saints, brought to Rome by Czech bishops, are preserved in a bust reliquary and displayed for veneration on their respective feast days in the Nepomuk Chapel.

St. Charbel

Charbel Makhlouf (1828–1898) was a Maronite monk in Lebanon.

He was canonized in 1977 by Pope Paul VI. On January 22, 2016, the Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai presented a relic of St. Charbel to Santa Maria dell’Anima during a solemn liturgy.

This relic, together with an icon of the great miracle worker, is now placed at the altar of the Margrave Chapel. His feast day is celebrated on July 24.

St. Servatius

Servatius († 384) was the first bishop of Maastricht. His veneration has existed in the Anima from the very beginning; in the past there was even a dedicated Servatius chapel.

On March 7, 2019, an official delegation from Maastricht brought a relic of the saint to Santa Maria dell’Anima.

The relic of St. Servatius is kept in a bust reliquary and is displayed for veneration on his feast day, May 13, in the St. Lambert Chapel.
