The Inscriptions of the “German National Church” Santa Maria dell’Anima in Rome
Part 1: From the Middle Ages to 1559
The digitally published partial collection of the inscriptions of the Church of Santa Maria dell’Anima and the associated buildings of the former pilgrims’ hospice and today’s priests’ college (hereafter consistently referred to as the Anima) contains the annotated edition of 120 inscriptions from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period up to the year 1559.
In an appendix, 15 ancient inscriptions are also presented, which certainly do not originate from the Anima, but were installed on the walls of the inner courtyard of the priests’ college in the mid-1870s.
The present catalogue records all inscriptions, both those preserved in their original form and those transmitted only through copies, insofar as they could be identified on site or in archives and libraries.
