The altarpiece was created by Giulio Romano in the years 1521/22 and was originally commissioned by Jakob Fugger for the furnishing of the Fugger Chapel.
The painting bears the title “The Holy Family” and depicts Mary with the standing Child Jesus and Saint Joseph. Also shown are the kneeling Saint James, John the Baptist as a child, and Mark the Evangelist with a lion at his feet.
They are the patron saints of the family members buried in the Fugger Chapel as well as of the founder. After more than half a year of restoration, the painting was returned in autumn 2007 to the also newly restored high altar, where it shines again in renewed splendor.
