Who We Are

The Priestly College of Santa Maria dell’Anima is intended for approximately 20 priests from German-speaking countries or from the territories of the former Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, who are sent to Rome by their bishops or superiors for advanced studies. Priests from other (Central) European countries who have basic knowledge of the German language are also admitted. Members of the Priestly College are called “Anima chaplains” and are also referred to as “Animali.” Former members of the college, the “Alt-Animali,” meet together with the current Animali every three years in a different diocese for the so-called “Anima Meetings,” to maintain and strengthen contact.

Rectors of the College

From the very beginning, the purpose of the Anima—as a hospice, center of pilgrim pastoral care, and priestly college—has been to foster the connection between the broad heart of Europe, once encompassed by the Holy Roman Empire, and the Holy Father, the Bishop of Rome and successor of St. Peter. It has been and remains a center of communication in the heart of the Eternal City, serving as a parish, a community of priests in advanced formation, and a place of spiritual guidance for pilgrims. Through personal experience and encounter, mutual understanding of the diverse cultures of this European region is nurtured and deepened, making it fruitful for service in God’s Kingdom. Especially in the face of the growing threat of media distortion, direct encounter and understanding are more important than ever. Therefore, the mission of the fraternity should no longer be limited to the core function of managing the institute. The original possibility of a widely distributed membership is being renewed.
